Led by Health Care Without Harm and Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Network Southeast Asia, the theme of the upcoming Green Hospitals Taiwan Assembly is “Leadership and Advocacy in Action: Toward Sustainable, Resilient and Climate-smart Taiwan Healthcare”. This is in partnership with Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital, Buddhist Tzu Chi Medical Foundation, Taiwan Society of Health Promoting Hospitals and Taiwan Health Promotion Association.

Leadership is essential for any sustainability transformation to happen. In order to foster green and healthy hospitals, leadership would entail prioritizing environmental health as strategic imperatives. A green and healthy hospital is one that promotes public health by continuously reducing its environmental impact and ultimately eliminating its contribution to the burden of disease. To demonstrate leadership in supporting green and healthy hospitals is to create major changes in the culture of the organization, be it an individual hospital, health system or ministry of health.

In 2020, the whole world was shocked by the COVID-19 pandemic and the health system was greatly challenged. Many environmental health issues relating to the health sector, including its generation of waste and use of toxic chemicals, came to the fore. In the same year, Taiwan experienced the worst drought after more than half a century, which can be attributed to a decline in the amount of rainfall in the country.

Scientists in Taiwan started a climate emergency declaration campaign and demanded the same effort to be provided to mitigate climate change as has been done to its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.2 The impacts of climate change are continuously being felt and the health sector around the world is still one of the biggest contributors of carbon emission.

It has become more imperative than ever for the health sector to join the climate call for action. A strong leadership commitment at all levels, from policy makers, system leaders, and hospital management to healthcare professionals, patients, and individuals at the community is necessary to take action, uphold and advance sustainable, resilient and climate-smart healthcare in Taiwan.

The main objective of the assembly is to gather hospitals, health systems, advocates and stakeholders who can demonstrate leadership in advancing sustainable, resilience and climate-smart healthcare in Taiwan amid uncertain times.

Specifically, it will:

  1. Determine how the GGHH sustainability agenda can be further mainstreamed in the organizational strategies of the Taiwan healthcare facilities to achieve healthy recovery from the pandemic and prepare for future impacts of climate change;

  2. develop a GGHH leadership strategic vision to advocate for sustainable, resilient and climate-smart healthcare in Taiwan; and

  3. strengthen sustainability documentation and communication capacity of hospitals through online tools and platforms.
